Rep. Ann Wagner, R-Mo., has decided against trying to unseat Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill, the Washington Examiner is reporting.
"Those who know me well know I put my family and my community first," Wagner told the Examiner. "While I am grateful for the incredible support and encouragement I have received from across Missouri to run for United States Senate, I am announcing today my intention to run for re-election to the United States House of Representatives in 2018."
Her decision came as a surprise, the website said. She had been considered the GOP's prized recruit to go up against McCaskill.
"The 2nd District is my home," Wagner said. "It's where I grew up, went to school, have worked and volunteered, raised my kids, and attend church every week — there is no greater honor than representing a place and people that I love."
David Robertson, professor and chairman of the political science department at the University of Missouri-St. Louis said McCaskill could be beaten by a strong Republican candidate, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
"This is a very vulnerable seat to a strong Republican," Robertson said
