Sen. Angus King: Faked Media Threatens Democracy

By    |   Thursday, 09 August 2018 12:04 PM EDT

Sen. Angus King says digital manipulation regularly used in the movies can also be employed to distort real news footage and may present a threat to American democracy.

"The most important part of the story" is how Russians used social media against the United States and the 2016 presidential election," King (I-Maine) said, The Press Herald reports. "And it’s still happening."

King said he fears what is called a "deep fake" -- digital trickery that enhances or alters reality to show convincing video that seems real.

"For somebody in my line of work, it’s pretty damn unsettling," he said, adding that once an altered video or audio recording is out there, "you can never really rebut it" fast enough or thoroughly enough to let reality catch up with the lie.
