A defense fund established to help ousted FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe with his legal expenses exceeded its goal and raised over $385,000.
The GoFundMe page for McCabe raised six figures within just a few hours on Thursday, CBS News reported.
The campaign surpassed its original goal of $150,00, the network news reported. It then exceeded its revised target of $250,000.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired McCabe on March 16, citing "an unauthorized disclosure to the news media" and lacking "candor" with Justice Department investigators.
He was ousted just two days before his retirement.
The GoFundMe page noted: "Andrew McCabe's FBI career was long, distinguished, and unblemished. He embraced the most daunting, difficult, and important challenges that the FBI and the country could assign to him over the past 21 years. He served the United States with courage and distinction in the days following the president's summary dismissal of former Director James Comey, in one of the most tumultuous periods in the bureau's history."
It called his firing "unjustified" and said no funds raised will be "used for anything beyond his defense of the allegations against him."
"The support for Mr. McCabe has been overwhelming, humbling, and deeply appreciated," it said. "He and his family continue to deal with the very public and extended humiliation that the administration, and the president personally, have inflicted on them over the past year."
