Andrew Cuomo Finally Endorsed By New York Times Editorial Board

By    |   Monday, 20 October 2014 11:12 PM EDT

Spurned by The New York Times editorial board in his primary race last month, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo snagged the endorsement for next month's general election.

In an editorial Monday, The Times cited the Democratic governor's pressure on GOP state legislators to allow same-sex marriage in 2011, his advocacy of "the strongest gun-control measure in the country," his on-time budgets, and tax policies that attracted "higher credit ratings for the state for the first time in decades" among reasons for supporting him.

"While The Times’s editorial board chose not to make an endorsement in the Democratic primary in September, we recommend Mr. Cuomo for re-election on the basis of these achievements," the editorial board stated in its endorsement.

"His Republican challenger, Rob Astorino, the Westchester County executive, does not have broad experience and, on many issues, is out of step with most New Yorkers and the needs of this state."

But the editorial board said the re-elected governor's "first order of business should be to use his political muscle to change the sham campaign finance laws that have turned Albany into a place that best serves moneyed interests and the politicians in hock to them."

In its refusal to endorse Cuomo in the primary, The Times complained "he broke his most important promise" and "failed to perform Job 1."

"The state government remains as subservient to big money as ever, and Mr. Cuomo resisted and even shut down opportunities to fix it," the anti-endorsement stated.
