The Girl Scouts of America put out messages on social media Wednesday congratulating Amy Coney Barrett on being confirmed to the Supreme Court but quickly deleted them after facing backlash.
According to Fox News, the organization's original Twitter post, a screenshot of which was shared by FOX 6 Milwaukee reporter Jason Calvi, read: "Congratulations Amy Coney Barrett on becoming the 5th woman appointed to the Supreme Court since its inception in 1789."
The post also included an image featuring Barrett, her predecessor late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Justices Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor, and former Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.
Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., a progressive member of "the squad," joined others on social media in slamming the Girl Scouts. "What kind of patch does one earn for uplifting a woman who is the antithesis of justice?" she tweeted.
The Girl Scouts later released a statement saying their original post was "quickly viewed as a political and partisan statement," which was not their intent.
"Girl Scouts of the USA is a nonpolitical, nonpartisan organization. We are neither red nor blue, but Girl Scout GREEN. We are here to lift up girls and women."
Barrett was officially sworn in as the 115th justice of the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday.
