Rep. Mark Amodei, the first Republican lawmaker to support an impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump, on Sunday clarified that he only supports the oversight process.
“Let’s put it through the process and see what happens,” the Nevada lawmaker said in a statement per The Hill. “I’m a big fan of oversight, so let’s let the committees get to work and see where it goes.”
Amodei, the chairman of Trump’s re-election campaign in Nevada, a swing state, said Friday it made sense to investigate a whistleblower complaint detailing Trump’s phone call with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskiy where Trump pressured the European leader to investigate Democratic presidential frontrunner Joe Biden and his son, Hunter.
Amodei on Sunday said he read the complaint and agreed that if it turns out that it’s something along the lines of the president “using government agencies to, if it’s proven, to put your finger on the scale of an election, I don’t think that’s right,” he said.
He also said anyone interpreting his words to mean that he backed impeachment was incorrect.
“If it was my statement and I had the ability to do it over, I would probably phrase it differently,” he said. “I don’t know that it’s a smoking gun.”
