President Donald Trump has nominated Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan to be the U.S. ambassador to Russia, the White House said Friday.
Sullivan, 59, was named to his current position by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo when he succeeded Rex Tillerson after President Donald Trump fired him on Twitter in March 2018.
Sullivan was acting secretary leading up to Pompeo's swearing in that April.
He holds a bachelor's degree in history and political science from Brown University and a law degree from the Columbia Law School.
Sullivan clerked for Supreme Court Justice David H. Souter and for federal appellate court Judge John Minor Wisdom.
