Rep. Justin Amash Sunday slammed House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy as being incompetent and dishonest over the answers the California Republican gave during a CBS interview on the impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump.
"Kevin McCarthy again displays his unique brand of incompetence and dishonesty," the Michigan Independent, who left the Republican Party in July, tweeted Sunday night, along with a video of McCarthy's interview with CBS's "60 Minutes."
During the interview, journalist Scott Pelley pressed McCarthy about the July 25 conversation between Trump and Ukraine's president Volodymyr Zelenskiy about whether it was acceptable to seek foreign assistance to undermine a political opponent, in this case seeking information against Democratic presidential frontrunner Joe Biden and his son Hunter.
McCarthy instead brought up the weight of votes for sending troops to war and then implied that Pelley altered a direct quote from the transcript released from the White House of the call between the two presidents.
He also asked Pelley why House members should move forward on impeachment, as the question is based on a telephone call House Speaker Nancy Pelosi "never even heard" and based on a whistleblower report when that person was not involved directly in the telephone call.
"With great respect to you, and I apologize for interrupting, but these are the White House talking points that were emailed to the Congress earlier this week," Pelley told McCarthy.
"I've never seen one talking point from a White House," McCarthy said. "I'm talking to you based upon the most important facts we have. The whistleblower wasn't on the call."
