Rep. Justin Amash, who on July 4 announced he was leaving the Republican Party, is expected to be removed from his assignment this week on the House Oversight Committee, Politico reports.
The newest member of the Independent party can only be added to another committee if House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., approves the move.
Amash, 39, on Sunday explained his reason for diverging as an Independent, saying he’d had concerns with the Republican Party for several years.
“This was the term that really broke it for me,” he told CNN.
“When I started the House Freedom Caucus… what we were fighting for was a better process. … Over the years, I've seen that people are just falling in line behind the leaders, including people in my own caucus, which I left. So it has gotten worse and worse and I think this was the term that really broke it for me.”
The Michigan lawmaker also said he got a lot of support for coming out in favor of impeaching President Donald Trump.
“I get people sending me text messages, people calling me saying ‘thank you for what you're doing. Great op-ed’,” he said referring to both his call for impeachment as well as his declaration that he was leaving the Republican Party.
