Former Republican Sen. Rick Santorum on Friday faced a grilling from CNN host Alisyn Camerota over President Donald Trump’s controversial meeting with his Russian counterpart.
Santorum, now a CNN contributor, addressed Trump’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
He acknowledged that it has been an “unsettling” week, but defended Trump against accusations that he was weak, saying the president has been tougher on Russia than his words may suggest, and blasting former intelligence officials for using words like “treason” to describe Trump’s conduct.
After saying she couldn’t believe the former senator didn’t seem bothered by Trump’s undermining the U.S. intelligence community or his declaring the “media the enemy of the people” for covering his meeting negatively, Camerota asked: “Do you ever get dizzy living in upside-down world? I just have to clarify, you seem to have been comfortable standing next to Vladimir Putin and blaming America?”
“I’m not comfortable with that!” Santorum replied.
Camerota responded that “that’s what [former intelligence officials] weren’t comfortable with! And they felt that it rose to the level of calling it something to the effect of treason!”
