The only openly gay lawmaker serving in the Alabama state legislature told the Washington Examiner that "men need to shut up" defending Roy Moore.
"I hate to say this, but men need to shut up defending him and listen to the women's pain," State Democratic Rep. Patricia Todd told the Examiner. "The cover seems to be, 'If it is true,' and I am so disappointed in my Republican peers who continue to support him. We have seen this too many times, a so-called Christian falling from that pedestal."
Moore, the former state Supreme Court judge who won the special primary to replace Attorney General Jeff Sessions' seat in the Senate, has dismissed four women's accounts of sexual misconduct nearly 40 years ago in a Washington Post report as fake news.
Alabama Republicans have come out to say that even if they believed the report to be true, they would still support Moore, including one who said it's "much ado about nothing."
"Take Joseph and Mary. Mary was a teenager and Joseph was an adult carpenter. They became parents of Jesus," Alabama state auditor Jim Ziegler said Thursday. "There’s just nothing immoral or illegal here. Maybe just a little bit unusual."
