Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen privately said separating family members at the border might continue, Rep. Adam Schiff tweeted on Thursday.

"Secretary Nielsen privately told lawmakers the Administration may go back to separating children from their parents. Congress must ensure that never happens," the California Democrat tweeted.

Schiff's tweet came after President Donald Trump signed an executive order that would stop the Trump administration policy of separating children from families and would instead keep children detained with parents while they await prosecution.
