Cambridge Analytica's suspended CEO Alexander Nix should be called back before the House Intelligence Committee for further questioning, Rep. Adam Schiff, the committee's top Democrat, said Wednesday.

The California Democrat told MSNBC's "Morning Joe," that Nix's first testimony, occurred by video conference at the insistence of the Intelligence Committee's Republican majority members, even though the CEO said he was willing to make a personal appearance, and "we didn't get the information that we needed."

Now, in light of the whistleblower allegations against Cambridge Analytica, there are "serious questions about the truthfulness of Mr. Nix's testimony," said Schiff.

Schiff said the committee also is inviting Aleksandr Kogan, the data scientist who harvested private information from more than 50 million Facebook users for Cambridge Analytica.

Kogan has said in an email to his colleagues that he would be "more than happy" to testify.

The New York Times reports that Kogan had told Facebook and app users he was collecting information for academic purposes.

Just over a quarter million people gave permission for their information to be used, but he ended up pulling data from more than 50 million users to give to Cambridge Analytica, which then used it to help Donald Trump's presidential campaign by staging a "culture war" during the election.

"There are still a lot of questions," said Schiff. "How did they get this data? What did Facebook know about this method in which they got the data? Did they bring on this researcher for the purpose of obtaining it inappropriately?"

Schiff on Wednesday also criticized Trump for his phone call to Russian President Vladimir Putin to congratulate him for his re-election.

"It is not the position of the leader of the free world and for the president of the United States to call Putin and congratulate him against the advice of his cabinet, when Putin essentially prohibited his main rival from running for office," said Schiff.

"What kind of congratulations are due for that subversion of the democratic process?" said Schiff. "I think John McCain is absolutely right. It's an insult to every Russian voter."
