NARAL Pro-choice America has purchased ads targeting Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, in the fight against President Donald Trump's unnamed Supreme Court nominee, The Hill is reporting.
Collins is expected to be a key vote in the confirmation fight, The Hill noted. The ads will appear in four Maine newspapers and websites: the Sun Journal, the Bangor Daily News, the Portland Press Herald and Kennebec Journal/Morning Sentinel. The ads will start appearing on Wednesday.
Digital ads are also expected on Twitter and Google.
"Trump has been loud and clear in saying he'd pick Supreme Court Justices to end Roe v. Wade," the ad reads. "We believe him. Don't you, Sen. Collins?"
Abortion rights activists fear Trump's eventual nominee will lead to the high court overturning Roe v. Wade. They hope to convince Collins and Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska to vote against Trump's nominee.
"Donald Trump has been crystal clear," NARAL President Ilyse Hogue said "He has a litmus test for his Supreme Court nominee: end Roe v. Wade. He said it repeatedly during his campaign. We believe him. For the sake of women in Maine, and across the country, we hope Senator Collins does too,"
"The burden of proof is on the nominee to prove that they will proactively protect Roe v. Wade and until they do no senator, and particularly no senators who consider themselves pro-choice, should vote for the nominee."
NARAL has vowed a 50-state campaign in its battle over the Supreme Court nominee.
"Our members are fired up, our phones are ringing off the hook, and we are ready to fight this fight," Hogue had said earlier.
