Former President Barack Obama slammed some Hispanic Americans who voted for President Donald Trump, saying they ignored his racist remarks because he supports their views on gay marriage or abortion.
"People were surprised about a lot of Hispanic folks who voted for Trump, but there’s a lot of evangelical Hispanics who, the fact that Trump says racist things about Mexicans, or puts undocumented workers in cages, they think that’s less important than the fact that he supports their views on gay marriage or abortion," Obama said Wednesday during an appearance on "The Breakfast Club" radio show where he discussed his book, ''A Promised Land.''
Trump gained 4 percentage points with Hispanics and Latinos from 2016 to 2020 and was able to cut into Democrats’ support in some competitive states including Florida and Nevada, according to exit polls conducted by Edison.
Nationally, Joe Biden earned support from roughly two-thirds of Latino voters, while Trump got the backing of about a third.
In the show, Obama also said that in Republican politics, ''you’ve seen created … this sense that white males are victims, they’re the ones who are under attack, which obviously doesn't jive with both history and data and economics. But that’s a sincere belief, that’s been internalized. That’s a story that’s being told. How you unwind that is gonna be not something that is done right away."
