Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar has become the focus of a new ad campaign focused on his role in the separation of migrant children from their parents, The Washington Post reports.
Equity Forward Action, a reproductive rights organization, has spent over $1 million to air a television ad in the D.C. metro market, aiming to link vulnerable Republicans in the House with Azar and President Donald Trump's administration, which has come under fire for its "zero tolerance" immigration policy.
The ad includes a clip from an interview Azar gave on CNN on July 10, in which he says, "It is one of the great acts of American generosity and charity, what we are doing for these unaccompanied kids who are smuggled into our country or come across illegally."
"Generosity?" a narrator says. "No, Secretary Azar. This is a disgrace."
"Call Congress," the narrator continues. “Tell them to reunite these children with their parents and hold Azar accountable."
The group’s executive director, Mary Alice Carter, told the newspaper that "raising a family in an environment that is safe from violence is a reproductive justice issue," and noted that they first became involved with the Office of Refugee Resettlement after it tried to keep a pregnant immigrant girl from receiving an abortion while in custody.
