Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., charged Sunday that Democrats have been “crying wolf” about the fate of special counsel Robert Mueller, and “wasted energy” to try to pass needless legislation protecting the investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election.
In an interview on NBC News’ “Meet The Press,” Barrasso called some Democrats’ call to tie legal protection of the Mueller probe to a must-pass budget bill as “the wrong way to go.”
“They have been crying wolf for two years that Mueller is going to be fired,” Barrasso said of Democrats. “Didn't happen, not going to happen. This is wasted energy to try to [legislate] this.”
He also advocated for for decisive action against Russian President Vladimir Putin as Russia amasses forces on the border of Ukraine.
“Putin respects strength and action. He will not stop until he is stopped,” Barrasso said. “He can smell fear and that's the way he acts. Any kind of action has to be a deterrence and a deterrence has to be a forceful response… He's cunning, he's opportunistic, he's aggressive. He probes for weakness and then takes it further. That's his position with Ukraine.
“He treats Ukraine as a guinea pig. He tries it there and then says ‘I can try it other places.’”
