Texas Democrats, critical of Gov. Greg Abbott’s handling of the coronavirus outbreak in the state, are launching a political action committee aimed at defeating him in 2022.
The Beat Abbott PAC will start raising money that will go to the eventual nominee the Democrats put up against Abbott, according to The Texas Tribune. Abbott is up for a third term in 2022.
In a statement, the group vowed to “hold Abbott accountable for his failure on COVID.”
Zack Malitz, a PAC board member who served on Beto O’Rourke’s 2018 Senate campaign staff, said: “We’re done listening to a governor willing to let people die in order to maintain his good graces with the likes of Donald Trump and the right-wing of the Republican party. People in this state deserve better than a corrupt talking head who looks out only for himself and the 1%. It’s time to beat him.”
Democrats maintain Abbott reopened the state too soon and have accused him of moving too slowly to take statewide action to curb the virus, the Tribune noted.
Earlier this month, Abbott ordered face coverings must be worn in public across most of the state. He had previously said the government could not order individuals to wear masks.
