The Justice Department's plan to expand the rights of same-sex couples is "consistent with the Obama administration's disdain for the ordinary rule of law," says syndicated columnist Maggie Gallagher.
"This seems to be an administration that says the law is whatever rule I like, and it's kind of extraordinary because, as far as I can tell, the courts are busy deconstructing our classic understanding of marriage as fast as they can," Gallagher, a senior fellow at the American Principles Project, told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"It's particularly striking, because the Supreme Court . . . when it struck down the federal definition of marriage, Justice [Anthony] Kennedy said this was partly based on the traditional respect for states' marriage laws.
"Now here we have [Attorney General] Eric Holder and the Obama administration just unilaterally deciding to ignore the laws of states and impose its values on states across the country."
