Author Foster: Novel Written to 'Give Hope' to Those Battling Addiction

By    |   Friday, 24 January 2014 04:54 PM EST

The author of a new novel about the struggle against alcoholism tells Newsmax that she wrote the book to "give people hope and a solution" in overcoming addiction.

The book by Jane Foster, "Below Sea Level" — she was born below sea level in New Orleans — won the 2013 Illumination Book Awards bronze medal for fiction.

Story continues below video.

It chronicles how a happy couple with two children is pulled apart by alcohol, and how the power of prayer helps bring them back together.

Foster, herself a recovering alcoholic, says in a Newsmax interview that her book "demystifies the process of alcohol and drug rehabilitation centers. I talk about a man who goes through rehabilitation in the process of this story. This would be very useful to anyone thinking of going into rehab, or to families that might have loved ones that might need to go.

"I give a clear example of how addiction wounds the family and the community and how recovery heals these wounds. Personally, I've had the experience that the power of prayer is transformative and I've had many people ask me how I pray. So I have a character in my book who explains that exactly."

Foster, who is now working on a second book, says "Below Sea Level" was written "from a Christian perspective because that's my life experience."

The book is set in New Orleans and Paris, two cities the author knows well.

And she says she has received "incredible feedback from this book. I've been so touched by people sharing with me their personal experiences with addiction and I've also read the reviews on Amazon.

"I'm truly humbled by the effect this book has had on people's lives."
