A longtime employee of the Trump Organization is fighting back against anti-Trump rhetoric and defending his former boss in a new book that he says showcases the "real" Donald Trump.
George Sorial worked for Trump for 12 years beginning in 2007 and spent his final two years as the company's executive vice president and chief compliance counsel dealing with Democrats on Capitol Hill as they probed Trump's business practices. His new book — "The Real Deal: My Decade Fighting Battles and Winning Wars with Trump" — comes to the president's defense.
"As a person that mentored me, took great care of me, shepherded my career, I always say there's few people that have done more for me than Donald Trump," Sorial said.
"I think the one thing that perhaps the mainstream media is most often incorrect about is there's this image that he doesn't listen to people."
Sorial then relayed a story when he and Trump were leaving a construction site after a "difficult day" of solving problems. The two men were walking together when Trump explained to him how he was able to become successful.
"He said, 'George it's really easy. I just look around and I see what people want, and I give it to them. I give people what they want,'" Sorial recalled Trump as saying. "You can see that that's really exactly what he did in 2016."
Sorial said Democrats are grasping at straws as they conduct numerous investigations into Trump's background. And he doesn't see a cohesive platform the party will lean on for the 2020 election — except for trying to take down Trump.
"I haven't seen, and I think this is part of their problem, what's their message? I really don't know. They're all over the place, they're talking about changing aspects of the Constitution," Sorial said.
"Some of their proposals are outright socialist in nature, and I don't think that's a direction that the country wants to go in. So I really don't think they have a message. … I think the one thing that unifies them is this ridiculous drive to discredit the president. And that's a pretty hard thing to do when you have his track record."
