Tom Tancrdeo: Jeb Bush Needs to Clearly Address Iraq Invasion

By    |   Thursday, 14 May 2015 09:03 PM

Jeb Bush should accept the fact he's in the hot seat over his brother President George W. Bush invading Iraq and address the issue clearly, former Rep. Tom Tancredo tells Newsmax TV.

"The reality is he's in the kitchen, buddy, and there's going to be plenty of heat — and he should be willing and ready to accept that," Tancredo, a Colorado Republican, said Thursday on "The Steve Malzberg Show."

Bush — expected to enter the crowded ring of GOP candidates running for president — kicked off a firestorm when appeared to approve of his brother's decision to enter Iraq in 2003.

During an interview aired Monday on Fox News, anchor Megyn Kelly asked Bush, "On the subject of Iraq, very controversial, knowing what we know now, would you have authorized the invasion?" He responded: "I would have and so would have Hillary Clinton, just to remind everybody, and so would almost everybody that was confronted with the intelligence they got."

But a day later in a radio interview, the former Florida governor appeared flip-flop, telling Fox News' Sean Hannity: "I interpreted the question wrong, I guess. I was talking about, 'Given what people knew then, would you have done it? … Knowing what we know now, clearly there were mistakes as it related to faulty intelligence in the lead-up to the war and the lack of focus on security. My brother’s admitted this and we have to learn from that."

Then on Thursday at an event in Arizona, Bush addressed the issue again, saying he would not have invaded Iraq had he known Saddam Hussein did not possess weapons of mass destruction.

Tancredo said Bush should have settled it by simply saying that knowing what he knows now, he wouldn't have gone to war with Iraq. It's something Tancredo says that he now admits himself.

"I can tell you that from a very personal experience. Knowing what I know now, I would not have voted to let the president go in there and I did," Tancredo told Steve Malzberg.

"We were told, everybody was told, that things were dire, that [Hussein] had weapons of mass destruction and that he was in contact with al-Qaida, all kinds of things and everybody believed it.

"We had no other information to dispute that with. Today we know better and so the simple answer to that question would have been, no, I wouldn't do it."

Tancredo, who ran for president in 2008, is author of the book, "In Mortal Danger: The Battle for America's Border and Security," published by Cumberland House Publishing.
