Author Ted Bell: A 'De-Facto Alliance' is Needed Between US and Putin

A "de-facto alliance" has to be created between the United States and Russian President Vladimir Putin to fight the growing, deadly threat of Islamic State terrorism, according to author Ted Bell.

In an interview with Newsmax TV's "Newsmax Now" hosts John Bachman and Miranda Khan, Bell – whose "Patriot: An Alex Hawke Novel," the latest in his spy thriller series, brings to life a power-hungry Putin – says his research into the real-life Russian leader shows him to be "a lot smarter and a lot cooler and a lot more of a likable guy than the incredible villain that we paint him to be in the West."

"I've been saying for a long time that this is a character who's motivated by strength and motivated by power and motivated by an incredibly strong desire to be an actor on the world state, at the same level as the other guys of the table," Bell says of Putin.

"He's just as worried about ISIS in his borders as we are, so he's got motivation to be [in Syria]," adding "I don't see a no-fly zone where we shoot down one of his and he shoots down one of ours and then we go to World War III."

"I don't know what the talks are going on behind the scenes, but there's kind of a de-facto alliance that has to be created here," Bell adds.

Bell says the question in his new novel is "who is the patriot … Alex Hawke … or Vladimir Putin."

"There's a lot going on with [Putin] that hasn't been brought to life enough," he says.

Bell says writing about Putin allows him to be in the same mindset – and that if he were to imagine what Putin is thinking currently about the ISIS threat, "I'd be thinking, I'm going to shoot – I'm going to bomb these people who threaten me and wouldn't it be great… if I find myself across the table from the American president and the two of us are figuring out how we're going to win this war?"
