Tea Party Leaders: We Appreciate the IRS's Retreat

By    |   Tuesday, 15 July 2014 02:54 PM EDT

Scottie Nell Hughes, news director of The Tea Party News Network, and Niger Innis, executive director of TheTeaParty.net, joined J.D. Hayworth and John Bachman on "America's Forum" on Newsmax TV on Tuesday to discuss the announcement by the Internal Revenue Service that it will no longer closely review applications for tax-exempt status submitted by nonprofit organizations.

"I like the fact that they are retreating, but I clearly understand what is going on here," Innis said. "It is a PR effort, but I appreciate it and I like it."

Hughes said that she appreciates the move, too, but it does raise some questions.

"How much power have we given this bureaucracy that they can sit here and take a 26-page document and condense it down to a four-page document?" she asked.

"This is the same organization that was allowed to target people," she added. "And now they are basically allowed to change the rules to sit there and choose which organizations can or cannot get 501(c)(3) to see if they are tax exempt. How much power?"
