Democratic Consultant: There's a Disconnect Between Public and Congress

By    |   Thursday, 21 August 2014 04:46 PM EDT

Democrats and Republicans are unable to come together on important issues even though the majority of Americans are in agreement, says Democratic consultant Jessica Tarlov.

The American people are "quite unified about a lot of key issues that are being debated all the time in the halls of Congress and yet we get nowhere on it," Tarlov told Ed Berliner on "MidPoint" on Newsmax TV Thursday.

"Immigration reform is one of the key issues," she explained. "Sixty percent of Americans want broad, comprehensive immigration reform."

That's not to say they don't want the border secured or that they don't want amnesty for the children who are streaming across the border over the past few months," she said.

"That's not to say that some don't want the 11 million illegals who are here already to get citizenship, but it's to say that they want something to come together as a group for the country, for the betterment of immigration reform as a policy, and Congress is not hearing them at all," she added.

Tarlov contends that the solution is for Americans to avoid extremists and elect centrist candidates.

"Centrist candidates are the way to go," she said.

"They will satisfy the greatest number of Americans," she added. "People really need to give moderates a chance."
