Author and gun expert Frank Miniter says that while he likes the smart gun technology, that the problem is that gun control advocates want to make such guns mandatory.

"I don't mind smart guns, in fact, I like the technology," Miniter told Ed Berliner on "MidPoint" on Newsmax TV Monday.

"The problem I have with smart gun technology, the same as a lot of gun owners do, is that the other side, the anti-gun side wants it to be made mandatory," he explained.

One such gun is the Armatix Smart System, which will only work if accompanied by a radio-controlled watch that the owner wears. If the gun is taken from the person wearing the watch, or knocked from his or her hand, the gun is deactivated. It is also helps to keep guns safe in homes where children reside. Other guns use biometric technology that are able to authenticate a user using a fingerprint sensor.

"This is a new technology," Miniter said. "It's just starting to touch the marketplace. Making it mandatory means that every other gun becomes banned."

"You can't retrofit this to all guns now available," he explained. "It's a new technology that uses a battery inside of a gun."

The author of "The Future of the Gun" says that there are great uses for smart guns for people such as prison guards and school officials, but that the threat to make the smart guns "mandatory stops the whole marketplace."
