Rodney Davis to Newsmax TV: HR1 Would Divert Corporate Fines to Campaigns

By    |   Tuesday, 02 March 2021 07:29 PM EST

Rep. Rodney Davis, R-Ill., says there are many provisions in the controversial HR1 voting bill that will make every single American's blood boil, particularly a measure that would take in dollars from "bad corporate actors" and divert them to a member of Congress’ reelection campaign.

HR1, called the For the People Act, is an 800-plus bill that folds together previous proposals for absentee voting, in-person voting, campaign finance, and ethics. Republicans have ripped the legislation as a "federal government takeover."

"We’ve reviewed the bill – my team has gone through it – there are some provisions that I think will make the blood boil of every single American, Republican or Democrat," Davis said Tuesday during an appearance on Newsmax TV’s "Spicer & Co."

"You may not know this, but Democrats are going to allow the first corporate funding of congressional campaigns since 1907, they’re going to take those corporate dollars, launder them in what they call the freedom from influence fund and then turn them into taxpayer dollars and allow every member of Congress to then get the corporate dollars from the corporate dollars that are now public dollars, get up to $7.2 million added into their own campaign accounts."

Davis said the provision is an extension of a bill Democrats attempted to pass two years ago before they were ripped by Republicans.

"Two years ago, when the Democrats introduced this bill, they wanted this 6-to-1 match program which would have been capped then at about $4 million dollars per congressional campaign," he said.

"They wanted it to be paid for by taxpayers. … Now they’ve decided to take in corporate money that they say is going to come from ‘corporate bad actors,’ fines that normally would go to pay for crisis assistance funds or rape crisis funds. They want to take those dollars, send them to the U.S. Treasury and then allow every member of Congress to get up to, now with their new formula, $7.2 million more dollars directly into our own campaign account."
