Tancredo's Terrifying Brush With Anti-Conservative Violence

Newsmax TV's "America Talks Live"

Former Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., says attacks against conservative lawmakers, including the recent shooting of Sen. Steve Scalise, R-La., are nothing new – and the Colorado Republican told Newsmax TV he has some frightening firsthand experience.

"This is not a result simply of the Trump election; it's been exacerbated certainly by that, but it's not new," Tancredo, a 2008 GOP presidential candidate, told host Bill Tucker on Wednesday's "America Talks Live."

Tancredo said in April 2009 he was at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill to talk to students at the invitation of a campus Republican group.

"As I tried to get into the building, it became impossible because of the riots going on outside because of my attempts to speak," Tancredo recalled. "They had to take me in a different way, back door, down in the basement, up in the top.

"I got into the room and there were probably a couple of hundred people in the room that should've held 150 maybe. The place erupted into such chaotic screaming, yelling you can't imagine the vitriol that was expressed, and I couldn't speak.

"There were several adults in there, not just college students, yelling as nasty things as anybody else . . . teachers who had brought these kids to this point of boiling over . . . They started throwing bricks through the window . . . and people tried to get out, of course, because bricks coming through the window."

Police officers arrived and grabbed Tancredo to whisk him off to safety.

"The cop that was pulling me out the door, hustling me out, weighed about 250 pounds, and he stepped on my foot and broke my toe," Tancredo said. "I was the only one that was injured in the whole thing, thank God."

Tancredo also had troubles at the University of Michigan Law School where "they're pulling the fire alarm every time I'd start to speak."

"This goes back a long way to when I was in college and [conservative students] had to debate the SDS [Students for a Democratic Society]. Never have I ever seen conservative students, conservative people, adults trying to stop a liberal from speaking and . . . reverting it some point in time to violence that they had to stop.

"This has gone on for a long time. Completely ignored by the media. They own the hate speech. They own therefore, as I say, the results thereof."
