Conservative political commentator Pat Buchanan gave qualified praise Tuesday to the GOP's tax code overhaul, saying "you got to invest a little bit of prayer this is going to work."
In an interview on "Newsmax Now" on Newsmax TV, the former GOP presidential nominee noted despite politics being "pretty poison," the economy is looking like it "will really pick up."

"I would've drafted a different bill," Buchanan said. "I would've put tariffs on all foreign imports . . . and use the revenue to virtually eliminate taxes on American corporations."
The current bill cutting the corporate rate to 21 percent, "that's a gamble, it's a bet," Buchanan said.
"It's a bet that this will stimulate the economy to grow, to expand, create jobs, and I think the Republican Party is wagering its future on it," he said. "So, I would certainly have voted with the Republicans on this one if I had been up there on Capitol Hill — with my fingers crossed."
Buchanan said the country needs to "get the good jobs back into the United States instead of exporting them — and get the wages of middle America rising steadily every year the way they used to do before 1975 when we went into this globalist economy."
"I'm hopeful," he said, adding President Donald Trump has "done a lot of good things."
"Part of this is you got to invest a little bit of prayer this is going to work," he said.
