Michele Bachmann: Fire VA Chief — and Boot Brian Williams, Too

Michele Bachmann, the fiery former Minnesota congresswoman, says Veterans Affairs  Secretary Robert McDonald should get the ax for lying about his military service, something that has become a "new copycat crime" across the nation.

"The VA is in trouble right now because they have failed to serve our veterans," Bachmann said Tuesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"And when you have one of their own at a position of power claiming that he's somebody that he isn't, it really disrespects those who laid their life on the line for us all."

In recent weeks, suspended NBC News anchor Brian Williams and Fox News personality Bill O'Reilly have been under fire for questions about their war reporting. Williams admitted his claim about being aboard a chopper felled by sniper fire was false, and O'Reilly has slammed a report in Mother Jones magazine that challenges his story of being in danger while covering Falklands War reaction in Argentina.

"This is a new copycat crime. All across America, we have all these individuals who are claiming that they were superheroes in one way or another and they aren't. For some reason, they have to continually pop up their resume when they don't have it. It is pathetic."

McDonald made his bogus claim that he served in the military's special forces as he spoke to a homeless veteran during a segment that aired on "CBS Evening News" last month. He apologized this week.

NBC's Williams admitted his claim about being aboard a chopper felled by sniper fire was false, prompting a six-month suspension from NBC Nightly News.

Asked whether NBC brass should fire Brian Williams for his confession, Bachmann said, "well, of course they should."

Bachmann, who was a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and a onetime presidential candidate, also spoke about the al-Shabab terror threat against the Mall of America in her home state, saying Americans should be concerned "without a shadow of a doubt."

"We should be very concerned because this wasn't just a joke or a PR stunt. This is an actual call for those who fought for radical Islam to actually take violent action here in the United States, in particular, at the iconic Mall of America," Bachmann said.

"The response is interesting from the federal government level. It's an absolutely apathetic, clueless response … by the head of the Department of Homeland Security, Jeh Johnson, who essentially said we have no credible threat.

"Don't forget, last fall, there was a call from terrorists who were those who couldn't come to the Islamic State in Syria to join the jihad and take jihadist action locally. That's when we saw the attacks in Canada at the Parliament … and we also saw two police officers innocently killed in Brooklyn. That was a direct response to a call to take action."
