Michael Reagan to Trump: 'Shut Up' and Stop Whining About Russia Probe

The oldest son of Ronald Reagan says President Donald Trump needs to "shut up," stow his "crying towel" and get on with the business of running the country.

And, veteran political commentator Michael Reagan adds, Vice President Mike Pence is likely "beating [his] head against the wall" at the commander in chief's behavior.

"I wish he would, in fact, shut up," Reagan, a veteran political commentator, said Friday on Newsmax TV's "America Talks Live" with Bill Tucker.

"His staff should buy a roll of duct tape and just put it over his mouth and then take him into a back room and break his thumbs! … I am so tired of it being about him instead of about really being about America."

Reagan, whose father Trump compares himself to, said the president's nonstop whining about the federal probe into alleged ties between his campaign staff and Russia, and whether they influenced the 2016 election, is only hurting him further.

"Forget that the media is on a witch hunt. Yes, we know that. But you know they were on a witch hunt with my father, they were on a witch hunt with [George W.] Bush. They've always been on a witch hunt against conservatives. This is not a news flash. This is reality," Reagan said.

"And so, you can sit there and whine about it all day long and take out your crying towel and just make excuses, what have you, or just get on with running the United States of America."

Reagan believes the appointment of a special counsel would never have flown if Trump had merely "given up his tax returns when he should have given up his tax returns. That would have taken care of the Russian issue."

He was also critical of Trump's criticism of former FBI director James Comey, who the commander in chief fired.

"Most people don't' do that, they let people down politely. They don't blow them up on the way through the building. They wouldn't be looking at a special counsel," Reagan told Tucker.

"All of this has been brought up 100 percent, 100 percent by the president of the United States because the media is what the media is. What's going on now is because the president is what he is."

Reagan referred to the Justice Department's appointment of former FBI director Robert Mueller to probe connections between Trump's campaigners and staff and Russia "political theater" – but said Trump is to blame for all of it.

"I think we all know there's no crime, this is all political theater if you will. But there wouldn't be political theater had Trump not fired Comey in the way he fired Comey, if you will, and done the things that in fact he's done. And so that's why you now get the political theater," he said.

"If he had been in, gosh, any of our wars, he's the guy that would have given a rifle to the enemy and the bullets and taken off the safety. And then yelled and screamed, ‘why did you shoot me?'

"This is what he's doing every single day and his staff is not telling him to go out and demean people, so in fact it's coming from him."

Reagan said that Vice President Mike Pence must be frustrated by Trump's behavior as well.

"If I was the vice president... I'm going home and I'm beating my head against the wall saying why in the world does he cut my legs off every other week when he asks me to say something then goes out and tweets and says something that in fact undermines everything that I'm trying to do?" he said.

"[If] he keeps on going down this road and giving the Democrats a reason to attack, the media more reason to attack and making himself the news instead of what should be the news – tax breaks and jobs and what have you – the Republicans will not control the House of Representatives after the 2018 election."

"But when you have a president who sucks all the air out of the room, people don't see what you are accomplishing. Because Donald Trump has sucked all the air out of the building."

Reagan is the author of "Lessons My Father Taught Me: The Strength, Integrity, and Faith of Ronald Reagan," published by Humanix Books.
