Newark Star-Ledger columnist Paul Mulshine believes Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer's claim that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie threatened to withhold Super Storm Sandy relief funds unless she approved a development project he favored.
"She's not the sort of person who would make this up," Mulshine told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.
"And, of course, until this thing blew up, obviously, it looks like the Fort Lee mayor was persecuted for having taken not even an anti-Christie stance, just failing to endorse Christie," Mulshine said Monday.
Zimmer's claims have been denied by Christie, his lieutenant governor and another top staffer in Christie's administration.
Mulshine said Christie did too little to stem the scandal when it first broke last year.
Christie's top aides were found to have orchestrated the closing of lanes to the George Washington Bridge — a scheme that led to four days of horrific traffic tie-ups. The aides first claimed the closures were for a traffic study.
"[Christie] should have cut it off back in December, after the executive director of the Port Authority, Pat Foye, testified there was no [traffic] study," Mulshine said.
"That's when he should've jumped on it, he should've fired [Port Authority executives David] Wildstein and [Bill] Baroni, He should've cleaned house, because it was really obvious."
Both Wildstein and Baroni later resigned.
