Republican political consultant Mary Matalin told Newsmax TV on Thursday that Donald Trump has done an excellent job of getting out his message, but that "I just don't know what the messages are."
"If I were on the campaign … I would say there's a huge difference between appealing to an angry primary electorate, an angry general electorate," Matalin, who directed President George W. Bush's campaign, told "The Hard Line" host Ed Berliner.
The mantra for running a presidential campaign is that "campaigns are always about the voters," she said. Matalin last month
changed her party affiliation to Libertarian.
"They're not about him. They're not about his court case. They're about the people — and he started there, and now he's verging back into himself and his ratings and all that.
"That's just not going to work in the general election."
