The Senate's failure to approve a $118 billion border security and Ukraine aid bill "absolutely was the right move" since it was a "bad" piece of legislation that "didn't fix the problem," a former special assistant to President Donald Trump told Newsmax on Thursday.
"I'm glad to see it go down," Marc Lotter said on "Wake Up America." "Absolutely was the right move because basically it didn't secure the border. It basically legalized illegal immigration when you don't even shut the border down until you get 5,000 illegal immigrants per day.
"I remembered [former President Barack] Obama [Department of Home Security] secretary saying 1,000 a day was a crisis. This was allowing five times that number before [President Joe] Biden could take action. No guarantee he would."
Lotter said Biden could fix the problem immediately.
"He has the power right now to secure the border. He just won't use it," Lotter said. "Remember, he took 94 executive actions in his 1st 100 days in office to undo all the successful Trump [administration] policies. He could start to bring them back and secure the border. He just refuses to do it.
"This has never been Congress' problem."
Lotter added that no one questions the U.S. commitment to Israel or Taiwan, but that Ukraine is a different matter.
"[W]hen it comes to Ukraine, why are we spending as much of American taxpayer dollars as the rest of the world combined?" he said, adding that Europe needs "to step up and do their part in their own backyard — and also let's make sure we have accountability, so we know where the money is being used."
Lotter said if there's passage of a $60 billion bill to aid Ukraine — along with $14 billion for Israel, $10 billion for Gaza in the West Bank, and several billion dollars for Taiwan — it "will just further alienate [Biden] from his woke, progressive left."
