President Donald Trump showed the "right amount of restraint" in responding to shocking details of the alleged slaying of Saudi critic and journalist Jamal Khashoggi, White House ally Marc Lotter told Newsmax TV on Wednesday.

In an interview on "Newsmax Now," the former special assistant to Trump and press secretary for Vice President Mike Pence said it is "important to note Saudi Arabia is a valued ally and critical to United States security interests in the Middle East."

"I think the president is showing the right amount of restraint while we wait for information" on the disappearance of The Washington Post writer.

Lotter also predicted the GOP would "break the cycle" of the party of power losing midterm elections.

"History would show . . . that generally the party that wins the White House loses a large number of seats" following midterms, he said. "We're going to break that cycle. We're going to expand the majority in the Senate — I'm very confident of that. The House is going to be very close."

He also said he believed red-state Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., did not intentionally publicly name — without their permission — sexual assault survivors, and wrongly name other women as sexual assault victims, in a disastrous campaign ad.

"It is malpractice on the part of her campaign," he said.

According to Lotter, the coming election will not be dependent on campaign cash or fliers by any one candidate.

"It's really going to be about people going and talking to their friends and neighbors . . . people at work at church how important it is that they come out and vote," he said.

"Because if the Democrats take control of the House of Representatives — and it's going to be close — you are looking at years of investigations, impeachment of [Supreme Court] Justice [Brett] Kavanaugh, possibly impeachment of the president, and really just putting a stop to all the progress we have seen."
