The taunting tweets President Donald Trump fired at North Korea's Kim Jong Un are the equivalent of a German Shepherd barking back at an annoying poodle, Marc Lotter, the national spokesman for Trump, told Newsmax TV.

"We have a president who has now reached the point where we cannot have this, we cannot have a nuclear North Korea," Lotter said Wednesday to Miranda Khan on Newsmax's "America Talks Live."

"Basically the way I would categorize it this is like a toy poodle who's barking at a German Shepherd. Eventually the German Shepherd is going to bark back and I think that's what the president basically is letting the North Korean leader know is that this is really not a fight you can win."

On Tuesday, Trump warned Kim, who's threatened nuclear strikes against the United States, that he possessed a nuclear button "much bigger & more powerful" than that of the saber-rattling North Korean strongman. "And my button works!" Trump added.

Lotter told Khan that Trump's message to Kim is, "there's a way out of this. Denuclearize, join the American [community], join the world community, and we'd happily have you as a partner — but not with nuclear weapons pointing at us."

As for the news that North Korea has contacted authorities in Seoul over a hotline for the first time in about two years, paving the way for possible detente during the Winter Olympics, Lotter said:

"Obviously we'll encourage progress between the North and the South in terms of talk but there is no mistake that the alliance between South Korea and the United States is strong.

"It's getting stronger every day and the South Korean president has even said that any kind of improvement in relations between the North and the South cannot be separated from North Korea's nuclear ambitions and the fact that they're trying to threaten the world."
