Lieberman to Newsmax: Trump 'Got the Middle East Right'

By    |   Sunday, 04 February 2024 01:21 PM EST

The Biden administration's Middle East policy has been based on a "mistaken belief that somehow you can trust Iran," while former President Donald Trump "absolutely got the Middle East right," former Sen. Joe Lieberman told Newsmax on Sunday.

President Joe Biden's policy, the Connecticut independent told Newsmax's "Sunday Agenda," is that "you can deal with Iran, or you can defang them diplomatically."

However, one can look at Iran's record since the Khomeini revolution in 1979 to know better and to see that "they are simply untrustworthy."

"More than that, they're violently anti-American and anti-our allies in the Middle East, particularly Israel and our closest Arab countries," said Lieberman. "The president and secretary of state and others keep saying, We don't want to escalate this into a regional conflict. But the reality is, Iran has already escalated it into a regional conflict."

On the other hand, Lieberman said he disagrees with Trump on many things, but he does believe he was correct with the Middle East "because he treated our allies as our allies and our enemies as enemies … our allies are Israel and the Arab countries and our enemies are Iran."

Trump also got the United States out of the Iran nuclear agreement, "which was an abomination" and with the leadership of his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, achieved the Abraham Accords between the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco, and Sudan."

Meanwhile, Lieberman said U.S. airstrikes will not deter terrorist groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah by treating them as separate entities, as they are "part of the Iranian military."

"They're trained by Iran, and they will do whatever Iran tells them to do," said Lieberman, adding that Biden was slow to respond to the attacks that killed three American soldiers.

"This is not going to get any better until we attack the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in Iran," said Lieberman. "That's where the central command is, and if we scare them and hurt them this will all get better and more peaceful in the Middle East."

Lieberman on Sunday also rejected the theory that former President Barack Obama is behind Biden's policy on Iran, but he does think there is a "continuity" from the "mistaken and dangerous Obama policy toward Iran."

And under Biden's policies, there will be no security for U.S. troops in the region or Israel unless the administration gets tough with the Iranians, not only militarily but economically, said Lieberman.

"They're selling more oil under President Biden than they did under President Trump," he said. "He put on maximum economic pressure, and that's the only thing that they will respond to — that and the military force used against them. They're a bully. And sometimes when you hit a bully the bully backs down, and we haven't tried that with them in a long time."
