Midterm election victories for left-wing Democrats may give a "short-term advantage" to Republicans, but in the long run, it is "a disadvantage for all of us," according to National Review foreign affairs correspondent John Fund.
In remarks Wednesday on Newsmax TV's "Newsmax Now," Fund said Tuesday's victory of Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., acolyte and political newcomer Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in a Democratic congressional primary was akin to the Tea Party sweep into Congress.
Fund, a Newsmax analyst, noted the "enormous consequences" of Virginia GOP Rep. Dave Brat's victory over then-GOP House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in 2014, including the retirement of House Speaker John Boehner.
"The Democrats on the far left look and say, 'Look, you sabotage Bernie Sanders . . . we're going to be bold, and we're gong to be rude,'" Fund said.
While analysts figure the liberal wing will only deepen the divide within the Democratic Party, Fund said there is a down side too.
"In the end, it's not good for any party to go so far over to one side of the spectrum," he said, calling the progressive wave a "short term-advantage for Republicans and long-term disadvantage for all of us."
