John Sununu: Bharara Should Have Been Fired Weeks Ago

President Donald Trump should have pulled the plug on Preet Bharara, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, last month, John Sununu, former governor of New Hampshire and former chief of staff to George H.W. Bush, told Newsmax TV.

"The only complaint I have is that they waited this long to get rid of him; they should've gotten rid of him two weeks ago," Sununu told host Steve Malzberg on Monday's "America Talks Live."

Trump demanded the resignations of 46 U.S. attorneys from the Obama administration Friday — an order Bharara refused to obey, prompting the commander in chief to fire him.

Sununu insisted Trump's federal housecleaning is nothing out of the ordinary.

"It always happens," Sununu said. "Presidents get rid of U.S attorneys from the other party. It's always like that. I don't remember the number that Janet Reno got rid of, but it was well over 80 or 90 in one fell swoop."

Sununu is the author of "The Quiet Man: The Indispensable Presidency of George H.W. Bush," published by Broadside Books.
