Even Democrats now believe the IRS is involved in a massive cover-up of the mushrooming tea party targeting scandal, says Jay Sekulow, chief counsel for the American Center for Law and Justice.
Sekulow, whose group represents 41 of the targeted groups, said a hearing Friday — at which IRS Commissioner John Koskinen continued to insist that key emails of Lois Lerner and others have been lost — stretched credibility.
"What this hearing showed today is that nobody in Congress really buys this, and even the Democrats that are trying to cover for the White House on this, in their heart of hearts they know that this is absurd,'' Sekulow said on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on
Newsmax TV on Friday.

"The IRS crash of Lois Lerner's computer takes place 10 days after she is receiving notification … about targeting of conservative organizations and 10 days later, the emails mysteriously are part of this so-called crash.
"Then we find out that the hard drives are melted basically, and all this information is gone…. This is a cover-up of unbelievable proportions. It's nothing we've seen in our lifetime."
Sekulow said a special prosecutor is needed for the investigation, although President Barack Obama is unlikely to approve one.
"Congress should keep pushing it … As more information comes out, the president may be put in a situation where he has to do it. He may not have any choice,'' he said.
