Secretary of State John Kerry and national security adviser
Susan Rice both insisted Thursday that the actions President Barack Obama described in his speech to the nation Wednesday are not war.
Members of the media, including CNN's Wolf Blitzer, were skeptical of that, as were Republicans. And former Bill Clinton adviser James Carville went a step further.
"The truth is we've been at war for 13 years and we're going to be at war for another 13, maybe forever," Carville said Thursday on Fox News Channel's
"The O'Reilly Factor."
He told host Bill O'Reilly that once the United States defeated al-Qaida, the Islamic State (ISIS) popped up. Obama outlined a plan of attack on Wednesday that would including expanding U.S. airstrikes from Iraq to ISIS' base of operations in Syria.
After ISIS is defeated, Carville said, another Islamic terrorist group will take its place. And in the complicated three-way civil war in Syria, it's not always easy to tell who are the good guys, he said.
"But you've gotta go get 'em, Carville," O'Reilly protested
"I'm not saying that we shouldn't," Carville said. "I'm saying that we should. People, this is war without end.
Carville invoked "Godfather" character Michael Corleone said, "Just when I thought I was out ... they pull me back in."
"We're never gonna get out of there," Carville said.
