Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz could beat front-runner Donald Trump in New Hampshire if the Texas senator wins the Iowa caucuses in February, Bill Kristol told Newsmax TV on Wednesday.

"I don't think it's out of the question," The Weekly Standard editor told "The Steve Malzberg Show" in an interview. "New Hampshire voters have been showing a tendency to move pretty late and pretty fast."

The New Hampshire primary will be held on February 9, one week after the Iowa caucuses. These are the first tests of the 2016 presidential primary season.

Kristol added that Florida Sen. Marco Rubio or New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie could give both candidates, however, a run in New Hampshire.

"There's going to be room for someone less conservative than Cruz and less outsider than Trump," he said. "Maybe it's Rubio. Maybe it's Christie.

"This race — we're used to having a zillion candidates, one debate and then another debate because there's so many candidates. But, honestly, by about February 10, after New Hampshire, we could be down to four or five.

"The elimination rounds are coming very, very fast."
