Columnist Howie Carr: Where Is Conn. Governor in Pelletier Case?

By    |   Wednesday, 07 May 2014 04:28 PM EDT

Boston Herald columnist Howie Carr says he doesn't understand why the state of Connecticut isn't more interested in the Justina Pelletier custody battle.

"Gov. [Dannel] Malloy has said absolutely nothing about this," Carr told Michelle Suskauer and J.D. Hayworth on "America's Forum" on Newsmax TV. "There have been more legislators from Massachusetts that have gone on record about the terrible situation that Justina finds herself in than Connecticut legislators.

"I can't believe that they would just sort of walk away from one of their constituents like this," he added. "But they have. They don't seem to have any interest, and I can't figure it out."

Pelletier, a 15-year-old Connecticut teenager, has been in a psychiatric ward at Boston's Children's Hospital in Massachusetts for 13 months for what her parents claim is a misdiagnosis.

"They wouldn't let the parents visit for Christmas or Easter or her birthday," Carr explained. "A number of people sent presents to her, and the nurse put the presents in a closet and wouldn't let the girl see them. Poor Justina now has chipped teeth apparently from forced feeding at Children's Hospital. Her health has deteriorated more than somewhat."

Before being transferred to Children's Hospital for a second opinion, she was receiving treatment at Tufts Medical Center for mitochondrial disease.

However, the Children's Hospital in Boston says that her problems are psychiatric not physical.

In March, a court decided to put her in the custody of the state of Massachusetts under the Department of Children and Families.

It was recently decided that she will be transferred back to Connecticut, but not to her parents, to a facility in Thompson, Connecticut, "which is at the other end of the state. It's far away from where the Pelletier family live in Hartford."

The move has infuriated her parents, calling it "barbaric."

Carr said there is a facility she could go into in New Britain, "which is easy driving distance from Hartford."
