Rep. Ashley Hinson joined the chorus of Republicans on Friday decrying the $1.9 trillion so-called American Rescue Plan being pushed by President Joe Biden and congressional Democrats, telling Newsmax TV that it was ''classic Washington pork.''
''I’ve been talking about targeted relief for my constituents for months,'' the 37-year-old House freshman said on ''Stinchfield,'' referring to Iowa’s 1st Congressional District which comprises much of the state’s northeast corner.
''We need to focus on getting the dollars to people who actually need it: that’s our small business owners, that’s our working families. And instead what we’re seeing is classic Washington pork. I love to talk about Iowa pork, and our pork producers in Iowa, but we’re continuing to see Washington’s budget process and spending process be broken.''
Hinson bemoaned the $350 million of the proposed spending — ostensibly to blunt the economic impact of the novel coronavirus — being allocated for ''bailouts for blue states,'' she said.
''I don’t think Iowa taxpayers should be on the hook for budgetary processes that are awry for years in these blue states like California, New York and Illinois. They have chronic budget mismanagement. They’re relying on taxpayers to continually come in and bail them out. And that’s just not acceptable to me.''
