National Security Expert: No Accountability, Oversight in Government

By    |   Tuesday, 17 September 2013 04:27 PM EDT

Tragedies like the Washington Navy Yard massacre occur because of a lack of accountability in the federal government, according to Bill Gertz, a national security expert and editor for the Washington Free Beacon.

"The government is completely broken. There is no accountability and there is no oversight," Gertz told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"Take the separation of powers. They separated Congress from the administration because they wanted to balance the power. It's Congress' job to make sure that the administration is doing things."

But Gertz said that in recent years, Congress has become subordinate to the administration.
"You have a situation where, in many cases, if not all cases, the Congress is actually facilitating a lot of these poor procedures and policies on the part of the administration," he said.

Gertz, author of "The Failure Factory: How Unelected Bureaucrats, Liberal Democrats, and Big Government Republicans Are Undermining America's Security and Leading Us to War," said government oversight must be improved to make America's facilities safe and secure.
"The people in charge of oversight have to take steps, remedial steps, to fix these problems," he said.
