Mediaite's Rothman: Social Conservatives Will Foil GOP Rise

Friday, 27 December 2013 05:52 PM EST

Retired conservative radio host Neal Boortz's opinion that Republicans will fail to retake the Senate despite the Democratic debacle of Obamacare raises legitimate points about the GOP's future, according to Noah Rothman, editor and columnist for Mediaite.com.

Boortz told Sean Hannity's radio show that the politics of aggressive social conservatives may torpedo the GOP's chances.

"He raised some really solid points … The GOP has the abilities to make inroads with the fiscal conservative message and it's frustrated by the social conservative message," Rothman told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

Story continues below video.

"There is data to suggest that the simple conservative message [is] particularly resonant right now with young people."

Boortz told Hannity: “They’ll keep the House, but they’re not going to get the Senate and I’ll tell you why: because they simply cannot resist the urge, the impulse to get into this social conservatism.”

Meanwhile, the GOP must learn to navigate the tricky landscape of the liberal media and its biases against Republicans as it gears up for the 2014 elections, Rothman believes.

"A double standard is a standard nonetheless and it's one that Republicans will have to adapt to if they want to win elections," he said.

"It's just the way of things."
