Star-Ledger's Strunsky: Christie Not Off the Hook for Bridge-gate

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie may have apologized repeatedly for the bridge-gate scandal that has rocked his administration — but doesn't mean he's free and clear, according to veteran Newark Star Ledger reporter Steve Strunsky.

"The governor has apologized, yes. He's been contrite and he took action, yes, firing his deputy chief of staff and the would-be Republican chairman, his political consultant," Strunsky told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"But, at the same time, others have raised the issue that why did the governor not know that this was going on in his office.

"So I guess there are those who are inclined to look at the negative side … that, well, this might show … a lack of awareness of all that's going on in his office or maybe even the lack of climate that would allow people to feel comfortable enough to broach these kind of difficult subjects with the governor."

Christie staffers have been accused of closuring of lanes to the George Washington Bridge in Fort Lee last September, as political payback for the mayor of Fort Lee's refusal to endorse Christie's reelection campaign. The closures clogged traffic for four days.

The Garden State's top lawmaker said Thursday he was betrayed by his staff and had nothing to do with the closures, which he was originally told were part of a traffic study.
