An independent prosecutor is needed in the Rayshard Brooks shooting, because a politically motivated prosecutor is using the charges against the police officer to get re-elected, according to Georgia Rep. Doug Collins on Newsmax TV.
"I hope it happens, because justice has to be blind in this case," Collins told Wednesday's "Spicer & Co."
"The Atlanta Police Department is hurting right now, and they need people to stand behind them," Collins added, noting charges were brought against the two police officers before the Georgia Bureau of Investigation had completed its own inquiry.
Collins added Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard, a Democrat, brought the charges because he was running No. 2 in his re-election bid.
"This is nothing but politics, and there's nothing in the prosecutors ethics that say you can prosecute just so you can win an election," Collins told host Sean Spicer.
Collins also rebuked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., for claiming Republicans were trying to "get away with murder" of George Floyd with their police reform bill.
"As a son of a Georgia state trooper, that's offensive," Collins said. "She needs to be held accountable."
In fact, Collins called for Pelosi to step down as Speaker. But, Spicer noted, she would not even apologize for suggesting Republicans were trying to get away with murder of Floyd, a political-charged accusation that warranted an apology, according to Spicer.
"Unfortunately it's not surprising for this Speaker," Collins said. "She is one who has abused the rules of this House since she became Speaker again. She's taken on the president in every opportunity, calling him everything from liar to someone who's done criminal acts.
"This is not new for Nancy Pelosi. What is normal for Nancy Pelosi is to vilify the other side."
