Rep. Doug Collins, R-Ga., told Newsmax TV on Friday that Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms’ mandatory mask order is “politically motivated” by a desire to “make headlines.”
“Let's just be honest about the mask mandate,” Collins said on “John Bachman Now,” in an interview. “Private businesses are asking people to weak a mask when they go in their business, perfectly within their rights. We have a governor who's actually said to everybody, 'Wear a mask, be a part of the solution in this.' But understanding the bigger ramifications that actually enforcing that takes us away from other things that we need to do.”
He added, “So, when you have mayors who are politically motivated, and let’s make no mistake, Mayor Bottoms is politically motivated, she's being vetted as a possible vice presidential candidate for [former vice president] Joe Biden. She needs to make headlines somewhere.”
Collins said that he’d like to ask Bottoms, “Do you have enough resources to go around and make sure everybody's wearing a mask when they're out, when they all should be taking the proper precautions during a pandemic, or are you finally going to just say, ‘I need to put my resources and taxpayer dollars behind our police department?’”
