Joe diGenova, the former U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, Monday slammed another former district U.S. Attorney, Jessie Liu on Newsmax TV as a "moron" and claimed she "screwed up" the case against ex-Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe, who the Justice Department said last week it would not prosecute.
"(She was) a weak, useless U.S. Attorney," diGenova told Newsmax TV's Howie Carr about Liu, who also had overseen the investigations into several high-profile cases related to President Donald Trump and the Russia investigation, including those pertaining to Roger Stone, Michael Flynn, and Paul Manafort.
Liu left her spot as a U.S. attorney to work in the Treasury Department, where Trump had nominated her to become the undersecretary for terrorism and financial crimes. However, she resigned last week after Trump pulled his nomination, and diGenova said that happened because the president had found out she was "complicit" in a recommendation to jail his friend, Roger Stone, for 7-9 years.
In addition, it was determined that the lead juror in Stone's case had a personal animus against Trump, diGenova pointed out.
"A Republican cannot get a fair trial in the District of Columbia," said diGenova, adding that even if it was thought McCabe couldn't get a grand jury indictment, then he should have been charged with several misdemeanors
But, he said he does not blame Attorney General William Barr for any of the problems, but instead the problem was in having Liu on the case.
"They were going to make her a star," said diGenova. "The president finally figured out she was a noodge, she was a nothing, and he said forget this, I'm withdrawing her nomination."
McCabe, he added, should have been indicted, but Liu "screwed up" the case as she "did not have the guts to deal with politically sensitive cases. It's a disgrace."
He added that he is "embarrassed" by what Liu and the other prosecutors did in his former office in connection with the Stone case.
"I want to challenge the four of them to a public debate at the National Press Club about what they did," he said.
